From November 14 to 15, 2020, the final of the second "Beikong Water Supply Cup" competition was held in Harbin Institute of Technology, sponsored by China Ecological Environment Industry and Education Alliance and undertaken by Beikong Water Group and Harbin Institute of Technology, which aims at improving the university students' ability of innovation and practice. The professional team from the College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT) successfully reached the final with "Second Prize" for groups and three individual prizes in simulation virtual competition.

Combining with the training objectives of engineering education professionals which emphasizes the ability of solving "complex engineering problems" by analyzing, judging and communicating, the competition aims to cultivate versatile talents with "craftsmanship spirit" for the future development of China's water industry by further deepening the reform of higher education and promote practical education. Moreover, the competition is also committed to building a communicating platform of innovation and practice for universities in order to achieve the deep integration of practical education and enterprise needs.

According to the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the competition of this year is divided into online trials and offline finals. Both of them are composed of two events: laboratory test and virtual simulation. All the participants must take part in the two events independently. Two different experimental projects were set up in the trial and final stages of the test competition, aiming to check the students' operation of experimental instruments.  Two modules were arranged in the virtual simulation competition, including 3D simulation software of typical urban sewage-treatment plant and virtual simulation software of gas chromatograph, which further broadened its the application in professional teaching.

Two professional teams were sent to participate in the competition represented by water supply and drainage majors and environmental engineering majors. After fierce competition, the team by water supply and drainage majors —Li Yibing, Hu Huitao and Yang Xiaoyu won the individual "winning award" of the virtual simulation group under the guidance of instructors Li Hongyan and Zhao Bowei. Another team by environmental engineering majors including Liu Zirui, LV mengran and Wang Xinyu stood out from 170 teams of 93 universities and successfully advanced to the final under the guidance of instructors Cao Fang and Shi Hong.

Twenty teams from 16 universities, including Taiyuan University of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Chongqing University, Nankai University and Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, competed for the final. Our professional team from the College of Environmental Science and Engineering has made great efforts and won the second prize of the group (ranking 11 in total score) in which Lv Mengran and Wang Xinyu ranked 11th and 17th among all the competitors.

The award-winning of this competition not only reflects the institute’s attachment on the cultivation of students' practical and innovative ability, but also provides opportunities for teachers and students to communicate with each other through disciplines constructing and intercollegiate exchanges by the concept of promotion of teaching and learning through competition.
